It’s obvious that what makes this casually eye-catching outfit “pop” is the spontaneously, colorfully printed scarf hanging surreptitiously from its owner’s neck. The boat shoes, the canvas shorts, the blue tank top, and even the wolf ring can’t compare to the sheer, naked brilliance of a beautiful silk foulard.
Printed scarves have long been one of my favorite accessories. In a closet full of wonders, recently I’ve peered down into the cubby containing the silks and cottons, rifling through the lot as if searching for buried treasure. Triumphantly removing from the thick a long floral number, I drape it comfortably around my neck. Scarves are the epitome of brilliance. Audrey Hepburn agrees.
The iconic, chic actress has made her mark on the world’s fashion scene, even today. Her multiple takes on the incorporation of scarves into the daily, sophisticated outfit have charmed the world. Audrey’s style is simple, exquisite, and exotically intoxicating. Take, for example, her necktie approach. Boyishly cute in her striped silk scarf, Audrey brings new meaning to modern style. Her famous headscarf captured the attention of the world. And in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” Moon River scene, she sports a lovely bandanna-scarf, even then looking her absolute best.
And the printed scarf is making a glorious comeback--on the runways, on the red carpet, and on the street. Some fans of the headscarf look include Kim Kardashian, Katie Holmes, Jacqueline Kennedy, Michelle Obama, and Her Majesty the Queen of England!
If you’re more into the preppy style, look only to Abercrombie & Fitch, Hollister, American Eagle, and Aeropostale. These stories rule the expensive-modern-prep scene, and if you’re addicted to their often similar looks, they, too, have created their own take on the printed scarf (albeit plaid and navy.)
But, if you’re like me, and more of a thrift-store-hopper, or (polar opposite, I know) someone who only frequents designer shops and webstores, you’ll find lots and lots of cool and adorable options. It’s not hard to find a printed scarf in a world that has turned so dramatically in its favor.
It’s the people who make the style--and it’s the people who’ve chosen printed scarves.
